THE ROOTS OF TERRAZZO It is most often reported that the birth of Terrazzo was in ancient Venice. The Venetian terrazzo f loor or “battuto” is so called because it achieved its maximum development and splendor in that famous Italian city. But terrazzo's roots lie even deeper in history, all the way back to ancient G reece, where floors made from stream stones were arranged and mixed with lime or clay. But for all practical purposes, terrazzo as it is known today, indeed did descend from mid-16th century Venice.
