Customers are often curious about how Dr. Terrazzo is able to create such an intricate looking floor when it comes to stained and polished concrete. The process begins with the use of coarse diamond segments bonded in a metallic matrix. These segments are used to remove minor pits, blemishes, superficial stains, or light coatings from the floor in preparation for final polishing. Depending on the condition of your concrete, this initial rough grinding is generally a 3 to 4-step process. The next steps comprise the fine polishing of concrete surfaces using diamond abrasives embedded in a plastic or resin matrix. Our well-trained professional technicians use increasingly finer grits of polishing discs (a process called lapping) until the floor has the desired look. Our experienced polishing technicians know when to switch to the next-finer grit by observing the floor surface and the amount of material being removed.
After the grinding and polishing process is completed we will then use an impregnating sealer/densifier to seal the floor. The sealer seeps into the porous concrete and becomes apart of the concrete by molecularly bonding to the concrete. It not only protects the concrete, it also hardens and increases the density of your flooring. Thus making it more durable and a finish that is able to last for years to come.
